The Santa Clara River Valley, known to locals as the Heritage Valley, boasts some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. Bounded by a rare east-west mountain range, the valley was a forbidding presence to visitors until the mid 19th century, when several hearty pioneers with an entrepreneurial spirit ventured in search of fortune and discovered black gold—oil. Some of those pioneers formed the Union Oil Company, incorporating in Santa Paula, and some discovered other ways to grow money in this rich soil. As they would soon prove, few places on earth offer such a combination of fertile land, perfect climate, and bountiful water.
In 1893 they bought 400 acres and founded Limoneira Company, the country’s first major citrus producer, as well as a successful grower of everything from lima beans to row crops to strawberries. A founding member of such well known companies as Sunkist, Calavo and Blue Diamond, Limoneira is today the largest lemon grower in the United States, and the largest avocado grower in North America.
The company now has more than 7,000 of the most beautiful agriculture acres in the world, and its assets include architecturally significant structures set in breathtaking landscapes. Coming to work here every day is a joy, and for the first time since the company’s founding, we’d like to proudly share our good fortune with outside visitors.
